The best decision they'll ever make
Lacey Hamilton is used to living in the background. Overshadowed her entire life, she stepped out of the Hollywood limelight and into the role she's meant to play a counselor, part of the High Risk Team started by The Lemonade Stand women's shelter in Santa Raquel.
Her caseload leads her to the doorstep of Jeremiah "Jem" Bridges to rescue a little boy. She's not supposed to fall in love with the rugged construction worker and his adorable son. Love and duty, though, don't always agree. Especially when a truth is uncovered that neither she nor Jem is prepared to face.

Warm and encouraging story... Social worker Lacey investigates a report of possible child abuse, but finds no evidence of the custodial father's abuse. However, there are enough signs of possible abuse that she cannot walk away, and she gradually develops a personal relationship with the child and his father, Jem. Lacey hands off the case to another social worker, and over time develops new suspicions about abuse of the child, which lead into suspicions about Jem's relationship with his ex-wife, and a painful confrontation with the realities of spousal abuse and child abuse. Excellent exploration of the less violent, but no less traumatic and damaging, forms of abuse that can take place in family relationships, and how coping skills and tolerance may be allowed to cloak abuse and bullying, to the point it's not visible to even other family members.Product details

His First Choice Where Secrets are Safe 9780373609581 Books Reviews
I was so invested in the lives of Lacey, Jem, and Levi by the end of this one I didn't even want to acknowledge that I had a life outside of the book. And only a teensy part of that was because of the work I still had to finish this weekend for end of semester ;) Most of it was just...This. Book.
I was right there with Lacey as she struggled to figure out who was the real threat to Levi...and gasped out loud (sorry Mini Moe #2! Mom really needs to stop reading when you're driving, honey!) when she and (her twin) Kacey found out from him what had happened to cause the bruising his preschool teacher had seen on his torso. I was right there with Jem, nodding along as he justified his ex-wife's behavior over and over again...until Lacey (with not a little bit of help from the crazy sauce that is Tressa herself) made me see just how toxic and manipulative she really was. And fearing that Jem was never going to really see it? Made my heart break just a little.
But then we get to the ending, which is SO GOOD. Seriously. There were tears over here. Lots of them.
Happy sigh!
I have to admit it took me until I was at about 50% before it finally clicked with me where the title came from--up until then I was scratching my head, musing First choice? But he was married before...what do they mean "first choice"? and then it hit me, and I swear I melted, just a little bit. That Jem. (dramatic sigh...) The cover, though. That is definitely not the silhouette of a four-year-old standing in between the man and the woman. But I can't deny that it's pretty, so I'll just pretend I didn't notice from here on in.
Besides, have I mentioned my love for what's behind that cover? ;)
How is it I've never read Tara Taylor Quinn before? (Quickly adding rest of series to TBR...) Please tell me Kacey's getting her own book someday, because that girl definitely deserves it, and not just because of her stellar babysitting skills... )

As you know, I’m a lover of all things Ms. Quinn. She writes with such heart and emotion that once you start a book of hers, it is hard to put down until you are finished. I found this to be one of those books that I had to plug the in because I literally ran the battery down while reading.
Once again, Ms. Quinn writes about a topic that is NOT discussed at all and that’s domestic violence against males. Oh yes, it also deals with child abuse but the crux of this story is domestic violence against men. Especially against our hero Jem. I spent a lot of time when I was reading this gem of a story with my heart breaking in two for Jem. A wonderful man that on the outside had everything. Worked for everything that he had and loved his son Levi with all of his heart. I don’t want to spoil how he comes to the realization that he is a victim but it does take the love of Lacey to finally come to terms with it.
Again, it starts out with the investigation of Levi and his broken arm. Trust me, when I was in the corporate world, my bank sponsored a division of caseworkers in Dallas and I was the chairperson. I saw first hand what caseworkers dealt with on a daily basis. Plus, my sister in law used to be a caseworker. I’ve seen and heard the stories. Truly heartbreaking and disgusting at the same time.
Jem has full custody of Levi and his ex-wife, Tressa has only weekend visits. Tressa was a piece of work and once you get into the story, you really start to feel for her but then BAM, she not only breaks Jem and Levi’s trust but yours, too. Ugh! I won’t go too in-depth with her story but she plays a big part in not only Jem’s story but the romance between Lacey and Jem.
Lacey is a strong person. Smart, Jem’s equal in so many ways but a little lost herself. Living in the shadow of her twin sister Kacey hasn’t been easy. (I have aunts that are twins so I know some of the issues that Lacey and Kacey have with each other and as individuals.) While there is some discord, in the beginning, it is quickly resolved and they girls are what they need in their lives in the right now. In fact, watching the girls interact with Jem and Levi was great. Kacey is a trip and so different from Lacey but that’s what makes their relationship and in a distant way, they way Lacey deals with her feelings for Jem and Levi. Also, how she reacts to Jem and his situation.
I can not stress that while Ms. Quinn’s books have a message there is also some of the best love stories to date. Poignant, relatable and emotional. You can’t help but fall in love with both characters. Ms. Quinn tackles the hard issues but in the end, love always wins. Always…
*I received this book for a honest review. My opinion is my own and I was not paid for it.*
I was somewhat frustrated with the hero, but he redeemed himself in the end. I am looking forward to the book that is due out next year that has the heroine's sister in the role as heroine.
Absolutely loved this story. Jem's story is one that not many men will admit to throughout their life, but more go through similar situations than you would think. I fell in love with the characters of this novel instantly as I always do with Tara Taylor Quinn's characters. She is an outstanding author and by far one of my favorites.
